Zu den neuesten Spielen gehören Talent Not Included, Chariot, Nun Attack, Zombie Tycoon 1 & 2, und A Space Shooter for 2 Bucks!

Über „FATED”: The Silent Oath

Beschreibe „FATED: The Silent Oath” in drei Sätzen!

About yourself

Please introduce yourself to our readers!

My name is Vincent Martel. I’m Executive Producer on „FATED”. I’ve been in the video game industry for 8 years, now. During that time, I’ve held various positions on dozens of projects for pretty much every platform out there.

Which other games do you have in your portfolio so far?

Our studio has published multiple titles on a wide variety of platforms; our latest releases include Talent Not Included, Chariot, Nun Attack, Zombie Tycoon 1 & 2, and A Space Shooter for 2 Bucks!

Tell us the story of how your studio came to be.

Frima was founded in the city of Québec in 2003 by Steve Couture, Philippe Bégin and Christian Daigle. The name Frima comes from the French word “frimas,” which is the layer of frost that forms on windows during winter. This is due to the fact that the studio made its debut in the poorly-insulated apartment that the three founders shared. We’ve come a very long way since then and are now one of the largest independent digital entertainment studios in Canada. In the past 13 years, we’ve worked with partners like LEGO, Mattel and Hasbro, while also developing our own intellectual properties, like „FATED”.

About „FATED: The Silent Oath”

Describe „FATED: The Silent Oath” in three sentences!

„FATED” is a first-person VR experience that puts storytelling and emotions in the forefront. It tells the story of the exile of a man and his family during Ragnarök – the end times. As he travels with them, he comes across a mix of touching and terrifying events, learning about himself and his loved ones, and taking the players on an emotional rollercoaster.

Give us a short, spoiler-free glimpse at the story.

Open your eyes: you are amongst the dead…

But there is still hope as a Valkyrie offers you a deal: should you want to save your loved ones, you will have to trade your life against your voice.

As you accept and come back from the afterlife, you realize that your world is at war.

There seems to be no hope, as villages are left in ruins and their people scattered to the four winds.

Will you have what it takes to unite the few that remain and lead them to safety or will you let the ancient giants of Old claim them one by one?

Why did you choose the viking setting?

Actually, the setting came pretty late in the process. We knew we wanted to tell a story and trigger emotions, we also knew that we wanted an apocalyptic setting in which the player would have to protect his family, but we didn’t have a specific setting in mind. I was watching the manga Attack on Titan and thought it would be very cool to have giants in the game. So we turned to Norse mythology as source of inspiration. „FATED” is heavily based on Norse mythology; The Prose Edda – an Icelandic book dating back to the 13th century – was a constant source of information and inspiration. The game draws profusely from it; we tried to stay as true to myth as possible, but we also wanted to give it our own spin.

Which different activities will the game offer?

„FATED” is highly story-driven, so exploration and dialogs plays a big role in the game. It’s all about experience over gameplay. However, we do have a few game mechanics to spice things up. For instance, the game has bow-hunting, puzzle-solving, and carriage-driving sequences.

Will you always be traveling with company?

Yes, most of the time. Companions are an important part of „FATED”. They’re the ones guiding the player through the story. They also give a lot of meaning to what you are doing in the game; we want you to care about them and want them to survive. Having characters around you in VR also makes the world rich and believable.

Why did you choose to make the game a shorter experience? Was it because many people can't play in VR that long or did it just fit in what you wanted to do with „FATED”?

We knew that our story-driven approach would require a ton of resources. The number of animations, characters, voice-overs and unique environments is very high, and there is very little re-use that can be done. Expecting „FATED” to be a 40-hour-long experience would be like expecting a 40-hour-long movie. We decided to make each episode roughly the length of a movie so there would be plenty of time to develop the story and create a memorable journey, but it wouldn’t break the bank either.

Does the game have any replay value?

Like a movie, you can watch it again and you might see things you missed or understand things you didn’t get the first time around, but it’s mostly a one-time experience.

About PlayStation VR

Why did you choose to support VR?

The game was originally planned for PSVR. We’ve been working with Sony for a very long time now, and we were one of the first developers to get our hands on the “Morpheus” two years ago. However, we also knew that we wanted to support as many headsets as possible, so we built the game with this in mind.

Do you support PS Move and the DualShock 4?

We support the DualShock 4 only. The game was designed from the ground up for that type of controller. That way we knew that the experience would be good on all platforms.

Does PlayStation VR have any advantages over the other VR headsets?

The three headsets we support are all high-end pieces of equipment and they all have their strengths and weaknesses. I really like the aesthetics and comfort of the PSVR; the potential user base and price point are also very interesting. We are excited to be launching „FATED” for PlayStation VR and are looking forward to connecting with a whole new community of fans.

How do you ensure that the players won't suffer from motion sickness?

The two most obvious things are keeping performance high and steady, and never taking control of the camera. The rest depends on how sensitive the player is to VR sickness. „FATED” is considered an intense experience due to our use of first-person locomotion. As long as it is well communicated to the player, I think it’s perfectly fine. Like any theme park, there are attractions for everyone, and I don’t think we should limit ourselves to an experience that works for every single person.

Will your next project support PS VR?

Most definitely, I love VR and its potential. There’s so much more that I would like to explore with it. We are planning a second episode for „FATED”, but are also looking into new projects as well.
